Hiking Seasons

Hiking in western Canada is not limited to any one season. Summer is by far the busiest time, however, as long as you are prepared for the season and the weather changes it brings, you and your dog can have a great time being out and about all year round.

Some hikes can only safely be attempted in summer because of the risks associated with heavy snow packs.

Spring and Autumn are referred to as shoulder seasons and some hikes are especially suited to being explored at these times of the year. Temperatures are generally cooler than summer which can be more pleasant for your dog. If you stay alert for the inherent risks during these times, you can enjoy some spectacular outings.

Winter brings its own unique challenges for hiking but there are many worthwhile reasons to brave the cold and head out on the trail. The air is brisk, the woods are quiet and the winter landscape provides a whole different perspective and amazing photo opportunities not seen during other times of the year. One must hike with care during snowy times and be aware of the avalanche danger at all times. Staying on routes that have a low probability of avalanches is the safest way to enjoy winter in the mountains with your dog.
