Where to hike with your dog in Kananaskis Country

Kananaskis Country, my favorite hiking area, is 4000sq km’s of wilderness 40 minutes driving time from my front door. Kananaskis Country , or K-Country for short, is a marvelous area with mountains and valleys, rivers and lakes and many great hikes for the canine and human alike. There are enough good hikes in this area to keep you and your dog happy and fit for a long time.

This is a Provincial Recreation Area made up of several provincial parks and wilderness areas east of Banff National Park on the eastern slopes of the southern Alberta rockies. In 1858, the explorer Captain John Palliser traveled through the area and named a mountain pass and river "Kananaskis" after a legendary native Canadian. It has been designated as a multi-purpose recreational area since its inception in 1977. This includes hiking, biking, skiing, golfing and horseback riding as well as designated areas for off road vehicles, hunting and fishing. K Country is definitely an all seasons playground.

To protect migrating wildlife, the southern section of the main highway through the Kananaskis Valley is closed from Dec1 to June 15 every year.
