Nose Work for Dogs

Nose work is any activity to locate a target scent or odor. Nose work for dogs is a sport developed for companion dogs as a recreational sport. Any dog can do it regardless of breed, size, and age. Dogs work individually in the sport so a lot of dogs that wouldn't normally be able to participate in a sport or group class if they were reactive or shy can participate in nose work. In this sport you can work with just about any personality because you are working on their strongest ability which is scent. The dogs’ nose is their primary source of information and so every dog can excel in it. The dogs run completely individual, there are no other dogs in the search area or on the sidelines. A bond between handler and dog grows. We see shy dogs become more confident, reactive dogs learn to focus and channel that more nervous energy in a more directive way so they are not barking and reacting, aggressive dogs can often soften a little bit. They have an outlet that seems to calm and focus them.

Dogs know how to use their nose and search to find something. What we have to teach the dogs are to become comfortable exploring. So many of the companion dogs have been told not to use their nose; "stop sniffing on the walk, stop sniffing that other dogs butt, get your nose out of the garbage". Sometimes the better behaved your dog is the more challenging this can be for them; “really you’re going to let me go explore with my nose?” We are not teaching them to search, we are teaching them that it is okay to search and that they are driving. It's all about building confidence and reminding a dog to be a dog. Nose Work Classes:
